“It kind of sucks”- Tony Gonsolin placed in Dodgers IL before game against Marlins

A few hours before his scheduled start against the Miami Marlins, the Los Angeles Dodgers placed All-Star pitcher Tony Gonsolin on the injured list due to a strained right forearm. Tony Gonsolin is tied for the big league lead with 16 victories despite pitching more frequently than at any other point in his career. He has suffered the most recent injury in a rotation that has enabled the Dodgers to finish with the best record in the majors.

“It just felt kind of tight coming out of the last outing,” Gonsolin said. “I’ve dealt with a little bit of tightness early this year. Thought it was going to go away a couple of days and it lingered this time, so we are going to push back.” The 28-year-old Gonsolin (16-1) has established himself as one of the best pitchers in the major leagues after alternating between starter and bullpen pitching his first three seasons.

With a 2.10 ERA, the right-hander leads the NL and is tied with Kyle Wright of Atlanta and Justin Verlander of Houston for the most victories in the majors. Tony Gonsolin advanced in the Dodgers’ rotation and was chosen for his first All-Star game as a result of injuries to three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler.

The workload for Gonsolin has increased as well, in contrast to his prior three seasons with the team. Gonsolin has already thrown 1281 and a third innings this year after reaching a major league-high of 552 and a half in 2021. According to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, Gonsolin is exploring new ground here. “One part of it is, you do lose a little bit of momentum of the season that you’re having. But I think the most important part is you have to do everything we can to keep him healthy,” he said.

During his time in the IL, Gonsolin doesn’t anticipate missing more than the two starts. He claimed that since earlier tests showed no structural damage, an MRI was not necessary. “Every ligament test came out negative,” Gonsolin said. “Everything is feeling really good other than a little bit of tightness when I throw.”

After beating Miami 3-2 on Monday, the Dodgers, who currently lead San Diego by 1912 games in the NL West, recalled Michael Grove from Triple-A Oklahoma City. In 423 innings of work against the Marlins, the right-hander gave up five hits, two runs, one walk, and four strikeouts.
