With the All-star break drawing closer, various MLB teams have started promoting their top prospects, hoping to make a meaningful impact. The Kansas City Royals on Saturday, handed a first major start for Samad Taylor. What followed was pure stuff of dreams as he walked it off for his side.
The Royals have been one of the worst teams this season when it comes to stats. The team’s abysmal record of 19-51 is the second worst in the majors, followed by the Athletics’ 19-54. The 2015 World Series winners are going through a torrid phase and had lost their last 10 games on the bounce.
As the story has been this season, the Royals once again found themselves trailing. Facing a daunting side in the form of Angels, the hosts seemed dead and buried early on. The visitors started off in a strong fashion. Two home runs from Brandon Drury and Shohei Ohtani‘s 150th career home run helped the Angels to an 8-2 lead coming in the bottom of the seventh.
The Royals mounted a comeback after scoring three runs in the seventh. In an impressive stat – the Royals went 6 for 10 with runners in scoring position from the seventh inning. Before this, they had only gone 10 for 69, which showed their lack of offense. Mike Trout then broke the tie at 8-8 with an RBI single. After some steals and bunts, Taylor launched one fly ball over the head of Trout. The Angles star man was unable to make the play, which resulted in wild celebrations from the Royals.
Twitter reacts as Samad Taylor shines in major league debut
What transpired on Saturday night at the Kauffman Stadium was nothing short of a fairytale drama. A young player making his major league debut, who goes 0-for-2 in his first two attempts, later walks it off? A true Hollywood style comeback. They say fortune favors the brave. The brave ones here were the Royals and Taylor, who kept fighting till the end.
“They were throwing a lot of breaking balls early. I may have seen four fastballs all day,” Taylor said in his post-match conference. He later added that he saw a change-up and decided to swing at it. Luckily for him, his decision proved vital as the Royals won the game 10-9. Here are some reactions from Twitter regarding this.
The 24-year-old rookie was picked as the 10th overall draft in 2016 by the Cleveland Guardians. He was also a part of the Minor League team of the Toronto Blue Jays. In 532 minor league games, Taylor has 54 home runs with an average of .262. The Royals fans would be hoping he can continue this impressive feat and help the team to a much more respectable finish.
