The Arizona Diamondbacks’ pitcher Madison Bumgarner was ejected during the first innings against the Miami Marlins after an argument with the first base umpire Dan Bellino. This incident resulted in the southpaw having to get pulled off during the game by bench coach Jeff Banister.

Bumgarner’s exploding on Dan Bellino wasn’t exactly for having a sticky substance of any sort on his hand, but it was mostly due to the exchange that happened with the umpire.

“I know why I got thrown out, yes. But you guys (have) seen the video. I don’t know if I could say anything that would make the situation better,” Bumgarner said, as quoted by Yahoo Sports. “So what I’m gonna say is I’m extremely proud of our team coming back and winning because I put us in a big hole there. You know, you didn’t go into the game to throw one inning, and so for them to be able to fight, and everyone picked me up today for what happened. That’s pretty cool. Very proud.”

Twitter reactions to Bumgarner’s hand checking incident

Talking about the 32-year-old’s checking of hands, which generally takes about two to three seconds, the case was quite different with Bumgarner. It seemed more like the umpire was trying to bait him rather than check on him. Bumgarner didn’t even look down at his hand and within a few seconds of checking, he exchanged some words with the umpire where the opposite party surely didn’t take things laying down. The result was Bumgarner getting ejected from the game.

Bumgarner said he’d never had his hand checked in such a manner before. “Well, I didn’t like it,” he said.
