“He wants a shot” – Tyler Nevin reveals raw emotions to witness dad Phil secure managerial opportunity

Phil and Tyler Nevin

When 25-year-old Tyler Nevin was promoted to the majors last September, he vividly remembers the raw emotions he went through while expressing his happiness to his friends and family. This led to Tyler getting a good pep talk from his long-time coach and father, Phil Nevin. To bring similar joy to the Nevin household, Tuesday brought the same vibe, happiness and energy back as Phil was selected as the Los Angeles Angels’ interim manager.

Having slogged his heart out in the minors, it is years of hard work which has finally paid off for Phil Nevin as he has finally secured a crucial job in the Majors, with one of its most reputed teams. This would be the first time, apart from Spring training last year, that Tyler Nevin would be getting a chance to perform in front of his father on the big stage.

He’s worked really hard for this, played a long time,” Tyler said on Thursday. “And that’s, frankly, why he’s still in the game. He wants it. He wants a shot to manage a team. He wants to win a World Series. This is the first step in doing that. Really proud of him.”

Tyler has always learned and improved his game under the guidance of his father, who is a former first overall pick and 12-year-old Major veteran as a corner infielder and outfielder. Perhaps now everyone understands why and how Tyler has endured the same position and role in his career too.

“I talk to him about my at-bats a lot and tell him what I feel like is giving me fits. And now it’s like, ‘Well, guess he’s gonna use that against me,’” Tyler laughed. “It’s part of it. … But it’s just funny, having those conversations, and then now he’s going to pick the pitchers that face me.”

Now to make everyone aware of the background of Phil Nevin, he initially broke into a managerial role by guiding the independent Orange County Flyers in 2009. In 2010, the former overall first pick was tapped by the Tigers for their Double-A affiliate and he then spent the next six years at the Triple-A level. Out of which, in particular – three with Detroit and three with Arizona.
