“Over the mountain”: John ‘Uncle Rico’ Gries goes berserk as Diego Cartaya hits big
Diego Cartaya and Uncle Rico
During any MLB season, there are plenty of guest broadcasters who have taken the limelight, the latest of which was John Gries, who is better known as Uncle Rico from the movie Napoleon Dynamite (2004). When the Hollywood actor was called in to witness the High-A Great Lake Loons, Rico’s words seem to have become more popular than the eventual home run.
Uncle Rico caught Dodgers’ No.1 prospect Diego Cartaya, who struck a towering home run which was majestic. But the actor expressed it even more beautiful in words, “was over the mountains.”
Diego Cartaya has surely gathered a lot of attention being the No.23 overall prospect according to the MLB Pipeline. What’s even more impressive is that he has homered in three consecutive games hitting .283 with a .993 OPS. The Dodger’s catcher, who is incredibly just 20 years old has 14 homers this year and 28 across 134 pro games.

Uncle Rico gushes over Diego Cartaya’s sweet homerun
Who knows maybe Uncle Rico could have even gone pro in baseball if it wasn’t for his elite skill-set in football. But perhaps for a player who can through a quarter of a mile with ease, it seems like he took the right decision after all. But for modern-day fans, hopefully, we could turn the time machine to witness the Napoleon Dynamite actor in action on the field.
That being said, apart from Diego Cartaya, the highlight of the day was when Alex De Jesus reached base five times for the Great Lakes, going 3-for-4 with two singles, including a home run and two walks. Since being called up to High-A at the end of the month of May, De Jesus has been hitting .330.

Being just 20 years old, he now owns an 11-game hitting streak, going 19-for-48 with eight extra-base hits over the given time span. But hopefully, De Jesus would also be hoping for Uncle Rico to be in the broadcaster seat, when he slashes his next mammoth home run.
