The New Year has already brought out a major development in the MLB world. The start of 2024 on Monday saw Tampa Bay Rays‘ star shortstop Wander Franco being arrested in the Dominican Republic.
The MLB All-Star had been under the spotlight after serious allegations against him broke out on social media. He was alleged to be involved in a relationship with a minor. Since this news broke out in late August, he was placed on the restricted list by the Rays and the MLB.
The Dominican Republic authorities recently raided two of his homes. However, to the officials’ surprise, the shortstop was nowhere to be seen at both of these houses. This raised several doubts in the mind of many with several rumors running wild on social media claiming he had somehow managed to run away.
However, that is not the case. As per reports from the Associated Press now, he has finally been found by the authorities and has been arrested. The arrest though has been made for a different reason and not because of any type of progress in the investigation. The 22-year-old MLB star was arrested from the northern town of Puerto Plata.
Wander Franco arrested for shirking investigators
When the news regarding Wander Franco broke out, the MLB community was left in shock and disbelief. The 22-year-old Dominican Republic International was one of the rising stars of the league and had just exploded the scene. His playing career is now in serious jeopardy as he was arrested on Monday for shirking the investigators.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Tampa Bay Rays’ star was ordered to appear before the investigators at the prosecutors’ office this past Thursday. Franco who was not found in his home a few days back, did not show up for this investigation. He was thus arrested for this.
The latest reports suggest that Franco showed up with two of his lawyers before prosecutor Olga Dina Llaverias. The investigation is said to have carried over three hours long. Following the investigation, he was arrested by the authorities.
In November 2021, Franco and his family celebrated a historic moment as he became the youngest player to sign a $100 million deal. He and the Rays had agreed to an 11-year $182 million deal, locking the star to 2032. He is now locked up somewhere else for unwanted reasons.
The MLB star though has denied all these allegations. He appeared live on Instagram in August and claimed people did not know what they were gossiping about. Further updates regarding this case are likely to be on the way in the upcoming days.
