Records are made to be broken. This is a phrase many have heard over their lifetime. While some records seem impossible to achieve, some are overtaken quickly. However, there are few such feats that someone does not want to break. The Washington Nationals broke an unwanted record that had stood for hundreds of years. The Nats have failed to register a sweep in their 90 series, breaking the record of Philadelphia Athletics 89 set from 1914 to 1917.

The Washington side stunned the MLB world when they defeated the Houston Astros in the 2019 World Series. The triumph became a fairy tale as they were the biggest underdogs against the favorites, the Astros. A lot has changed since their Fall Classic win. They have lost several key players including Juan Soto, Trea Turner, and Anthony Rendon.

As a result of this, they have slumped down the order. The Nationals are now considered one of the worst teams in MLB. In the past three seasons, the Nationals have finished rock bottom of their division. However, this feat of not sweeping their opponents is an odd record. Though they have picked up series wins, they have not registered a swept in their 90 series.

A sweep as the name suggests means cleaning out the opponents. A team is said to have swept aside their opponents if they take all the games available in the series. The previous record of 89 belonged to the Philadelphia Athletics, around 106 years ago. They would have avoided this if they did not lose the first game of the series against the San Diego Padres.

When was the last time the Washington Nationals swept a team?

A Major League Baseball (MLB) season sees a team play 162 regular games (apart from the COVID season). In this six to seven months stretch, teams face off against each other in various two to four-game series. In this period, many teams get completely swept by their rivals. The Washington Nationals however have not tasted a series sweep for a long time now.

The last time the Nationals registered a three-game series sweep was back in June 2021. Two years ago, they swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-game series between June 13-15. However, their last series sweep came on August 17-18 against the Toronto Blue Jays. This was a two-game series sweep. Ever since then, they have won 19, lost 63, and tied 8 series.

Following their 8-4 loss against the Seattle Mariners, this record has been already extended. Their record o 30-48 makes them the worst team in National League followed by the Colorado Rockies. Tough times do not last long and the Nationals will be hopeful of that. They would be hoping this barren run ends soon.
