Watch: Willson Contreras and Ian Happ embracing intense emotions, potentially play their farewell game at Wrigley Field
Willson Contreras and Ian Happ
Willson Contreras and Ian Happ have potentially played their final home game at Wrigley Field, with both being the selected candidates to be traded as the Chicago Cubs continue a two-year overhaul of their roster. They were seen embracing each other after the game with an emotional hug that made each and every fan feel the pain of detachment.
Willson Contreras has been a part of Chicago Cubs since he was 16 years old and bidding farewell to your Major League home is never easy. Ian Happ is a six-year veteran with the franchise, he could be seen bidding farewell with Willson before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
“It’s going to be a long day,” said Willson Contreras as he is only a phone call away from being traded. “It’s been a long, long, long, long week, long, long month for me. But I’m ready for this to be over.” On the other hand, Ian Happ said, “It was an emotional day for a lot of us,”.

“I was feeling like I was saying the same thing over and over,” Willson Contreras said to the reporters, “because I don’t know what’s going to happen. I didn’t want to say anything that I’m going to regret later. … I feel like today was a good day to talk to you.”
“It’s just hard,” Willson Contreras added with grief, “because any time that you hear that you have a little time off, or free time, your mind is going probably right to the trade rumors. I wish that’s not the case, but I won’t lie. I talked to [manager David] Ross about it. It’s not easy. You have to learn how to deal with this. This is my first time in this position.”
He was picked up from Venezuela when he was 17-years-old and made his debut when the Chaicago Cubs were rallying for their 2016 World Series campaign. Willson Contreras has gradually obtained the role of a mentor with years of experience in hand.
Recently he expressed how things have changed for the franchise as he was once part of that Chicago Cubs team along with Kyle Hendricks and Jason Heyward. But unfortunately, now, the team is only experiencing what no one appreciates, losing.
