Moving on from one place to another is not an easy task. Whether it’s normal life or any professional sport, shifting can be a big change. MLB star Xander Bogaerts is one of the many players who went to a new place. The 30-year-old left the Boston Red Sox after nine years to move to San Diego Padres. The two-time World Series winner signed with the Padres on a huge $280 million, 11-year contract.
The Red Sox tried to retain their star player, but their offer was no match to the ones Padres had offered. Nicknamed the ”X-Man”, he signed with the Red Sox in 2009 as an amateur free agent. His major league debut came in 2013. A year later Bogaerts became the organization’s starting shortstop and went on to win the AL silver slugger award for that position in 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2021.
In a recent interview, Bogaerts mentioned that he has no hostility towards his former team. He would mention good things about the Red Sox and praise his former teammates, coaches, and backroom staff. The Red Sox fans were left to rue when they found out that the team was unable to retain him.
The team also lost J.D. Martinez. The outfielder would go on to join the Los Angeles Dodgers. With Trevor Story already out injured, the Red Sox have been dealt with another huge blow as new recruit, Adam Duvall joined the injured list with a wrist fracture. Duvall who was named AL Player of the week after his hot start to the season was injured while attempting a diving catch. Duvall’s absence is likely to hurt the Red Sox’s offense.

Red Sox offense’s struggle for consistency
After failing to retain the services of Bogaerts, Trevor Story was the likely replacement for the franchise. The outfielder underwent UCL surgery in his right elbow in January earlier this year and is likely to miss huge parts of the 2023 season. With these two options gone, Enrique Hernandez has taken up the shortstop position for this season.
The Red Sox have made a mixed start to their 2023 season. After losing a close game to the Orioles on opening day, they came back to win the next two games. In the opening series, they clocked up 27 runs (9 each) in these three games. After that they lost all three games of the series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, They would recover from this with a series sweep against the Tigers.
This run of form has seen the Red Sox bottom of the AL East standings with a 5-5 record following a 1-0 loss by the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays. It’s not a big gap as they are only one game behind the second-placed New York Yankees. Meanwhile, the Rays continued to dominate as Brandon Lowe’s solo homerun was enough to beat the Red Sox. This win marked their tenth consecutive win of the season as they stand undefeated.
The offense of the Red Sox has contributed 59 runs in their first ten games. It cannot be considered a bad feat or that they are lacking offensive power. However, 24 of those runs came in their series sweep against the Tigers. Not to demote them, but the Tigers are statistically one of the worst teams in baseball this season so far with a record of 2-7. Only the Athletics have a much worse record than them (2-8). Getting swept by the Pirates could also signal that Red Sox might miss their stars which they were unable to retain.
