“Means the world to me” – Yankees’ Clarke Schmidt soaks in ‘very special moment’ against Tigers
Clarke Schmidt
The hopes of the New York Yankees of getting length from their starting pitcher was succeeded with flying colours as Clarke Schmidt stepped up at the right moment. This resulted in a big 4-2 win for the Yankees over Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on Tuesday night.
Earlier ace Gerrit Cole faltered, but Schmidt grabbed the opportunity and pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings with six strikeouts. The former, who had flustered and was unable to command his pitches, was pulled from the game after just 1 2/3 frames. In the end, the 26-year-old Schmidt nabbed his first career win in the Major League Baseball (MLB).

“It means the world to me,” said Schmidt, as quoted by MLB.com. “A lot of work has gone into this. To be able to get my first career win here, it’s a very, very special moment, something that I don’t take lightly. It’s a big blessing for me.”
Manager Aaron Boone calls Schmidt’s contribution “huge”
“Even with the off-day yesterday, there are a few (reliever) were still staying away from,” Boone said. “We needed that length from him (Tuesday). For him to go out and get us out of that jam in the second inning, and then get us through the middle innings, was a big effort for him.
“It was a huge effort and let us set up the bullpen in the back half of the game how we hoped.”
The Georgia native Schmidt signed off while saying that it was a highlight to twice face Miguel Cabrera, who is four hits away from 3,000 for his career.
“It was a special moment, especially since he’s chasing such a milestone,” added Schmidt, a 2017 first-round pick out of the University of South Carolina. “He’s such a prolific character in this sport. You see the response from the crowd. What he’s done for this sport is nothing less than amazing.”
