One major talking point of the 2024 MLB season so far has been the uniforms designed by Nike. The jerseys have received huge backlash from the players and the fans for their design. This intense uproar has now led MLB and Nike to making some changes.
As per reports from ESPN‘s Jeff Passan, Major League Baseball is planning to address the “fiasco” created by these jerseys. Nike, who are the developers of this, are now set to modify them.

While the jerseys have been called out for collecting a huge amount of sweat, the design of the pants has also been criticized. The see-through pants has received massive flak from the supporters. Recently, the quality of these pants was also questioned when Detroit Tigers’ star Riley Greene ripped his pants while sliding onto the home plate.
This massive development of Nike reportedly changing the uniform comes after a memo was released by the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). In the memo, the MLBPA blasted Nike for making changes that were not required.
This has been entirely a Nike issue. At its core, what has happened here is that Nike was innovating something that didn't need to be innovated.MLBPA said in the memo.
Nike originally rolled out these jerseys during the 2023 All-Star Game. At that time, the received positive feedbacks from the players. However, since the start of the Spring Training this year, they have failed to win over the hearts of fans and players.
What changes are MLB expected to make in their uniforms?
With the announcement from the MLBPA, the players and fans can now expect a new set of uniform in the upcoming future. As per the memo released, a huge alteration in the jerseys and the pants is on the cards now.

According to ESPN, the major modifications will include the return of “return to larger lettering on the back of jerseys.” This season the size of the lettering had been decreased which irked many fans.
Apart from this, “remedying mismatched gray tops and bottoms“, “addressing the new Nike jerseysโ propensity to collect sweat” and correcting the pants is something that MLB and Nike have planned. These changes are likely to come into affect by the start of the 2025 campaign.
Nike currently is in the fifth year of their $1 billion, 10-year deal which they signed in 2019. This deal made them the league’s official uniform supplier. Prior to this, MLB was in a deal with Under Armour but the company backed away in 2018 which opened up the doors for Nike.
