New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso considers himself “lucky to be alive” after a near-fatal traffic collision in Florida on Sunday as he was reporting to spring training. The Mets first baseman described the horrific incident and fortunately, he emerged from the incident unscathed, however, as did the others involved.

Alonso mentioned that another driver ran a red light at an intersection in Tampa and “T-boned” his white Ford pickup truck. The latter flipped over three times before coming to a rest on its side. Stuck upside down in the driver’s seat, the Tampa born kicked out the front windshield so that he could escape while his wife, Haley, who had been driving a different vehicle behind him, immediately called the authorities.

“[Sunday] was a real close experience to death,” Alonso said standing in front of his locker at Clover Park. “My car flipped over probably about three times … and I am really thankful to be alive, thankful that I’m healthy.”

“One minute I was coming here to spring training, coming here to work and the next thing I know I am kicking my windshield in, trying to get out of a flipped-over car,” he added. “Thankful enough nothing is wrong, and also, thank you Ford for having great engineering.

“Thought I watched my husband die in front of me”

Haley Alonso went on to share a post on her Instagram handle while revealing the exact details of the unfortunate incident that happened with her husband.

“I thought I watched my husband die in front of me and I will never forget that feeling,” Haley Alonso posted on Instagram. “This could have easily unfolded much differently and that’s what is so scary. Life can be taken from us in an instant.”

She added: “Please do not drive distracted and wear your seatbelt. This happened five minutes from our house, it can happen anytime, anywhere.”
