Seiya Suzuki, who last week grabbed a handsome $85 million contract for five years by the Chicago Cubs, made his debut on Friday. The slugging outfielder had a great outing in Arizona but he picked something else over his couple of strike-outs during the game against the Colorado Rockies.

“I’ve been able to eat a lot of junk food,” the Cubs’ newly signed right fielder said, through his interpreter, Toy Matsushita during Friday’s broadcast after striking out in both at-bats against the Rockies in his spring debut for the Cubs.

Chick-fil-A,” he added. “I like the Chick-fil-A sauce with the chicken nuggets.”

Suzuki’s sense of humour during the chat was truly on point which his team members were early talking about. The former Japanese All-Star, batting champ and Gold Glove winner even went on to say that “someone’s going to throw some beer at me someday” if he continues with such performance in upcoming games as well.

I had that adrenaline rush when I saw my name on that billboard,” Suzuki said via his interpreter, “But, if I keep on striking out like today, someone’s going to throw some beer at me someday.”

“Felt like rookie as I first went into Japan league”

The Tokyo native Suzuki got a rousing welcome from Cubs fans when announced during his debut. This resulted in further butterflies in his stomach, making him feel like a “rookie”.

“I felt like when I first went into the league in Japan, like a rookie,” he said of his nerves.

“I’ve faced foreign players in Japan,” Suzuki, 27, said. “But today I guess I was nervous, so I didn’t get good swings in. That’s what I would like to do in the next game, make adjustments and get a better at-bat.”
