St Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol gave fans quite a lot to talk about ahead of the Major League Baseball (MLB) opening day on Thursday. During the announcement of his pitching staff, Marmol told the media at the Cardinals‘ workout day that Jordan Hicks would be the team’s No. 5 starter to open the 2022 season.

As a result, Hicks will make his debut career start on Tuesday against Mike Matheny and the Kansas City Royals at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Reacting to the beginning of his new journey in the league, the 25-year-old Hicks expressed his happiness and he’s looking forward to the same.

“I would tell everyone around me,” Hicks said of wanting to become a starter. “Everyone has been hearing that since I’ve been in the big leagues — that I’ve just been saying that. Most people know that’s been my goal and my dream. … I’m just really excited. I try to stay a little bit serious. I’m just happy.”

“Jordan Hicks is more ready than ever”

During the announcement, Marmol further went on to say that Hicks would be limited to start, but that he would be out there every five days.

“We’ve talked about it for a while. Jordan is now healthy. A couple of things came to mind when we reported for spring. No. 1 is his health. No. 2 making sure he felt in control of his outings every time he was out there and not speeding things up.

“And No. 3 was a maturity thing, are you going to be able to handle starting every five days and the in-between time making sure you’re ready both physically and mentally for that start. And he’s more ready than ever and we’re looking forward to it,” Marmol said on Wednesday.
