“Agreed on terms $8….”: Jackson Holliday offered the largest deal for a high school player in MLB history

Jackson Holliday was the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB Draft that took place earlier this month. As per Jon Heyman of the New York Post he has now reached an agreement with the Baltimore Orioles, who had this years’ first pick, for an $8.19 million contract. The young shortstop would be getting a bonus “just a touch” higher than the $8.185 Million dollars received by Druw Jones, the second overall pick.
Jackson Holliday is the son of Matt Holiday, who is an American former professional baseball left fielder. He is now the out fielding and hitting coach at Oklahoma State University. Matt played in Major League Baseball from 2004 to 2018 for the Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals, and New York Yankees.

Coming back to Jackson Holliday, he has set a new record for the players coming straight from High School. He was named the Baseball America 2022 High School Player of the Year, from Oklahoma batted .685 with 17 home runs and set a high school record with 89 hits in a single season. He had 30 stolen bases in 30 attempts. He is committed to Oklahoma State.
18-year-old, Jackson Holliday, is a second-generation baseball talent, the left-handed hitting shortstop was ranked the #3 player in the draft class by Baseball America, ESPN and MLB Pipeline, #2 by FanGraphs and #6 by The Athletic.

“I want to be the best player, and I want to honor the Orioles for selecting me,” Holliday said upon being the No.1 overall pick. “I’m going to work as hard as I can to to make it to the Major Leagues and have a great career for them and for their fans. I’m very excited. And I always compete.”
“He was kind of freaking out,” Jackson Holliday laughed of his father, Matt Holliday. “… It’s hard to explain what it means. It’s like a video game, honestly. Every video game you play, you’re the first pick. That’s kind of what it felt like, and it’s something that I’ll never forget. It’s a true honor.”
