Many scenarios will result in the referee calling off the fight between MMA fighters. The most common scenarios are when a fighter taps out to submission or can’t defend themselves from strikes intelligently. On rare occasions, the referee will stop the fight when a fighter suffers an injury. The referee will also stop the fight if the fighter’s corner throws in the title.
Recently, something unexpected happened in an MMA fight that forced the referee to stop the fight. At Dynamite Combat Sports 91: Spring Brawl 2024, Kwajuan Mensah lost to Zach Ross-Williams after the referee stopped the fight when Mensah vomited inside the cage. The referee immediately stepped in to call the fight off even though Mensah appeared to fight. Ross-Williams felt disgusted and walked away.

Before the finish, Mensah had the upper hand in the fight. However, he appeared unwell after the two fighters clinched and broke away. With the weird loss, Mensah fell 2-2 in amateur MMA. On the other hand, Ross-Williams won his first amateur MMA fight. He had lost his debut to Hunter Greene via guillotine choke.
There have not been weird stoppages in the major MMA promotions in the world. In the UFC, referee Herb Dean once stopped the fight when he heard the cracking sound of a fighter’s bone break. Recently, in the PFL, referee Marc Goddard stopped the fight between Cedric Doumbe and Baysangur Chamsoudinov after Doumbe looked reluctant to fight. However, Doumbe later showed a shard of glass on his toe, which was the reason for his reluctance.

Secondly, in the main event, referee Herb Dean tried to break the fight after Jamahal Hill kicked the groin of Alex Pereira. However, Pereira immediately stopped the referee’s intervention and knocked Hill out in the next few seconds. Many believed the incident caused a lapse in concentration from Hill.
