Gordon Ryan, a renowned figure in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), is currently experiencing a major setback at the peak of his career. He has been hospitalized due to a severe throat infection, which is untreatable. It is believed that he got the infection during his recent visit to Abu Dhabi. After being out of action for over six months, the promising BJJ athlete finds himself back in the hospital for another surgery.
Despite being just 27 years old, Gordon has been dealing with persistent stomach problems since 2019. But this time, his throat has become an addition to his struggle. Gordon Ryan shared an update on his health through an Instagram post, expressing uncertainty about his comeback to competitive BJJ. He disclosed that upon returning from Abu Dhabi, he caught a severe case of strep throat, which caused his throat to swell and resulted in his hospitalization.
The infection did get diagnosed with the usual treatment. Unfortunately, though, the doctors are not able to cure it. Gordon recently provided an update, stating that he is unsure about his return to competition.
Surprisingly, the infection did not respond to the usual treatment of penicillin. Even the doctors are not able to figure out why that is the case. After trying different antibiotics, including amoxicillin and penicillin, he is now feeling better.

Gordon also had ear discomfort as a result of his throat problem, making it hard for him to control his heart rate. His gastrointestinal problems have gotten worse, causing nausea and lack of appetite. Gordon had a tonsillectomy and corrective surgery to address these problems.
He posted this update to keep everyone up to speed on his competition schedule, expressing optimism for a return in the coming months. In addition, he hinted about making an appearance on TUF season 31, where Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler’s teams will battle.
Gordon posted, “Hi everyone- quick update for everyone who has been asking. I’m not sure when I’ll be competing again. When I got back from my Abu Dhabi trip I came down with a severe case of strep throat which ended with me in the hospital because my throat swelled shut. Doctors also couldn’t figure out how to cure it since no one ever fails penicillin for a strep infection. In all, I did 7 days of amoxicillin and within a day my throat was back to square one……..”
Gordon eventually found relief with a 14-day course of clindamycin. In total, he endured over 40 consecutive days of antibiotic treatment, along with a penicillin shot.
Ryan has been absent from competition since his short-notice fight against rival Nicky Rodriguez at Fight Pass Invitational 3. He was scheduled to make a comeback against Felipe Pena at Tezos WNO earlier this year, but unfortunately, ongoing stomach problems compelled him to withdraw from the event.
