At UFC 248, the last PPV with the crowd before the pandemic hit was headlined by a lackluster fight between Romero and Izzy for the middleweight title. It was highlighted even more as just a few minutes prior, Zhang Weili and Joanna Jędrzejczyk had delivered the greatest WMMA fight in history.

At a recent interview with Ariel Helwani at the MMA Hour, Romero revealed that he felt Izzy was “too pampered” and believed he could run through the Cuban like many of his previous opponents. “Let’s get one thing straight, he called me out, he said he wants to face the beast when no one else wanted to and not only did he want to face the beast, he wanted to retire him”, said Romero as he reminded everyone that it was Izzy who came in with all the big trash talk

“I stood in the center of the octagon, ready for the war, ready for blood to be shed and for fans to see an all-out war, and what happens? He starts to fight and feels my power and he starts running away from me”, said Romero claiming he wasn’t willing to run after Izzy only to be caught up in his counters.

Romero then quizzed Ariel saying, “How many boring Romero fights do you remember? ” to which Helwani replied saying, “Respectfully The Izzy fight was boring.” Romero then responded saying, “Exactly! “ Helwani would try to clarify Yoel statement asking him if he meant the only boring fight he was ever associated with was the Izzy fight. Romero responded saying, “Yeah, and how many fights that Izzy had were boring? “ As Helwani realized what he had been set up for.

Romero was Izzy’s first title defense after capturing the undisputed title from Robert Whittaker. It would also be his last fight for the UFC. Of his last 4 fights, 3 were for the title and Romero missed weight in two of them.

The main event between the two saw a total of a combined 90 strikes landing through the entire 25 minutes. In contrast, the loser of the co-main event, Jędrzejczyk alone landed a staggering 196 total strikes.

Israel last saw a knockout victory against Paulo Costa back at UFC 253 in 2020. Since then all of his fights have ended in a lackluster decision.
