Since Khabib Nurmagomedov retired in 2021, MMA greatness has been defined by undefeated careers and dominant performances. Michael Morales emerged as one of the few UFC welterweight contenders who maintained a perfect professional record while climbing the rankings. However, a recent update on the Tapology statistics platform added a previously unlisted loss from an early regional bout.
Morales earned his UFC contract with a unanimous decision victory over Nikolay Veretennikov on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021, a performance that secured him a place on the UFC roster. He made a name for himself immediately in his promotional debut at UFC 270. Competing on a high-profile pay-per-view card, Morales knocked out veteran fighter Trevin Giles in the first round to announce his entry.
Morales recently produced a statement knockout victory over Sean Brady at UFC 322. Tapology later added a previously unlisted defeat from his early regional career at the Ecuadorian promotion Ultimate Pelea Season 2. The adjustment changed Morales’ overall professional record to 20-1 while all official UFC results remained the same. This led the Ecuadorian welterweight to react strongly to the sudden change.
I’ll punch injustice right in the face, F you Tapology.

The knockout victory over Brady undoubtedly pushed Morales back into serious conversations for a title opportunity. Islam Makhachev’s championship win at UFC 322 became a catalyst for leading contenders to separate themselves. Fighters such as Ian Garry and Carlos Prates moved to pursue high-stakes bouts to position themselves for a title shot. The result intensified competition at the top of the 170-pound division.
Morales remains undefeated in the UFC welterweight division and has secured victories over established names, including Gilbert Burns, Jake Matthews, and Neil Magny. Those wins have confirmed his steady progress against veteran competition inside the Octagon. His performances demonstrated consistent finishing ability and composure, and made Morales a serious force in the 170-pound division.
Michael Morales is now laser-focused on earning a UFC welterweight title shot through continued activity and preparation. He remains active by training and sparring on a regular basis to stay ready for upcoming matchups. The contender continues to build his career within official UFC competition, where he is still undefeated. The Tapology update served only as a factual correction to his early professional record.
Sherdog associate editor confirms no change in Michael Morales’ professional record
Sherdog has long been recognized as one of the most credible and established MMA record-keeping platforms in the sport. The Fight Finder database is routinely used by promoters, commissions, and media outlets to verify professional results. Sherdog profiles track sanctioned bouts from major organizations and regional promotions across multiple countries.

ABC-trained referee, judge, and Sherdog associate editor Jay Pettry confirmed that the website will not be changing Michael Morales’ professional record. Pettry contrasted Sherdog’s policy with the recent opposition from Tapology, which added an earlier regional loss to its independent database. Sherdog reviewed the Ultimate Pelea reality series in the past and ruled those matches as exhibitions.

We reviewed the "Ultima Pelea" reality series ~two years ago, and determined that these tape-delayed matches would not be marked as pro.

The ruling preserved the Ecuador native’s unbeaten status despite the Tapology adjustment. After many pushback from many in the MMA community, even Tapology came out with a statement that they reversed their decision, and made the rising star undefeated again in their website.

The only UFC fighters still ranked and undefeated are Shavkat Rakhmonov, Movsar Evloev, Lerone Murphy, lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, and middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev. Michael Morales continues his UFC welterweight career with all official Octagon victories intact after the Sherdog review and numerous support from the MMA community.
