Bellator MMA just wrapped up their Hawaiian event Bellator 278 which took place on April 22 inside the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. The event was headlined by the women’s flyweight championship class between Liz Carmouche and Juliana Velasquez. After four rounds, Carmouche finally own the belt via TKO stoppage. But the result was controversial and fight fans had mixed reactions to it.
In the fourth round, Liz Carmouche got into a top crucifix position and started dropping elbows but none of them looked serious. But referee, Mike Beltran had other ideas as he stopped the fight. Velaquez was furious by the decision and argued against it but the fight was decided.

After the stoppage made by referee Mike Beltran, the fight community on Twitter didn’t hold back in criticising the decision.

Patricio Pitbull was extremely annoyed by Beltran as he lashes out on Twitter and blamed the referee for his regular mistakes. He remembered his title loss that according to him was Beltran’s fault and now it’s the same with Juliana. “Mike Beltran should never be allowed to referee a fight again! First he took away my title and now he takes away Juliana’s title. He should be held accountable! @BellatorMMA #Bellator278,” wrote Pitbull.
One user wrote that the stoppage will attract a lot of conspiracy theories and disputes. ” I can’t wait for the conspiracy theories about former Marine Mike Beltran stopping that fight early for former Marine Liz Carmouche, because it is coming.”
Shaheen Al-Shatti, the deputy editor of MMA Fighting shared the Twitter post of Bellator’s MMA scorecard. By taking reference to the scorecard, Al-Shatti claimed that Velasquez was 30-27 above before the fight was stopped by Beltran. ” Juliana Velasquez was up 30-27 on two scorecards before that Mike Beltran stoppage. #Bellator278,” wrote Al-Shatti.
Scott Coker also tweeted about the fight but didn’t mention anything about the controversial stoppage. The president of Bellator MMA congratulated Carmouche for becoming the new Flyweight World champion.
