Mohamed Salah has been Liverpool’s biggest asset in recent years. The Egyptian king has time and again proven his worth to those at Anfield, with the game against Ipswich Town being nothing less than a show of his brilliance. Salah ended last season with 18 goals and 10 assists to his name in the top flight.
Fans are hoping to see more of the same this season as well, with his goal against newly promoted Ipswich on opening day setting the tone for the rest of the season. The Egyptian picked up the ball at the edge of the penalty area before linking up with Dominik Szoboszlai at the edge of the box. Even though the return pass from the Hungarian eluded Salah, the 32-year-old outpaced his marker to nudge the ball past Christian Walton to make it 2-0.
With the goal, Salah also broke the record for most goals scored on the opening day in the Premier League. No other player has scored as many goals as the Egyptian king (9).
Following the win, Liverpool are now third with three points and will face Brentford next weekend. Arne Slot also became the first Liverpool manager this century to win their opening game in the Premier League.
Liverpool kick off Arne Slot era with a win
Liverpool aren’t used to winning their season opener under new managers, as revealed by a list of losses or draws dating back to 2004 under Rafa Benitez. However, the Reds were in no mood to let that record continue as they took on newly promoted side Ipswich. Slot’s men were given a run for their money by Kieran McKenna and co., with the score 0-0 going into half-time.
The Dutchman’s half-time talk surely did the trick, as Diogo Jota opened the scoring for his side in the 60th minute. As revealed later, Slot made technical changes so that Liverpool players started winning more duels and gained control over the game. Jota missed a golden chance to head home from close range before quickly making up for the missed chance a minute later.
Salah saw the striker unmarked and passed the ball to the Portuguese to tap into an empty net. After drawing first blood, Liverpool found their groove, and it didn’t take long for the second. Salah’s commendable effort doubled the visitors’ advantage as they took home all three points on opening day. Following the game, Arne Slot claimed that the second half was a ‘joy to watch’. A few took their words back, criticizing the club for their lack of signings in the transfer window.
