Veteran India fast bowler Mohammed Shami is pleased to see the strong bench strength in Indian cricket, specifically in the pace bowling department. Owing to the injuries to the senior bowlers, we saw Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini and T Natarajan in the Indian team for the fourth test against Australia at Gabba.

The youngsters secured a landmark victory in Brisbane, clinching the series that made them famous around the world. Though Bumrah and Ishant returned to the side for the home Tests against England, Siraj was chosen in the team over Umesh, and he has bowled superbly yet again, assisting India to qualify for the World Test Championship final.

Shami has recovered from the wrist injury and is playing the IPL 2021. He is also expected to feature in the final of the WTC against New Zealand.

Mohammed Shami speaks on India’s bench strength

Mohammed Shami claims that he doesn’t consider the present scenario as a rivalry. Instead, he is glad that the future of Indian cricket is in the possession of youngsters. He believes he will continue to play as long as his body is in good shape.

“I don’t see it as a competition. Newcomers are our bench strength. Whether batting or bowling, newcomers are the future. No one can play all his life. As long as there is skill and my body will accompany, I will play. I can’t keep dragging on my career for the sake of it.” said Shami.

“And a good reserve bench is therefore very important. It’s great that the new boys are playing well. Their confidence will also increase. They will keep getting better with tough experiences. There is no competition. It is excellent news for the Indian team that so many talented boys are coming up,” he added.
