Mohammed Siraj has previously often been seen as the shadow of Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah has created his own legacy of being one of the great modern day fast bowlers, however, behind that notion, Siraj often slips under the radar.
The recently concluded India England series has given new life to Siraj as a red ball bowler. It has propelled him to fame like never before. In an interview with ANI on Monday (August 4), former Indian fast bowler Yograj Singh came up with heavy praises for the pacer and even compared him to the great Kapil Dev.
The way our players have played, it was amazing to watch. The way Mohammed Siraj bowled, he reminded me of Kapil Dev. Even he had taken 5 wickets in the last Test match in Australia. He has back then bowled with injury. There was a patch at the popping crease, he bowled from 10 yards behind. Just like that, Siraj showed that we can even bowl fast.

Yograj Singh, who is the father of famous all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, was entirely in awe of the performances the Indian team put up. He also reminisced about the famous Kapil Dev final Test spell in Australia.

Singh also proudly appreciated the fielding efforts and the captaincy of Shubman Gill. He was clear in mentioning that it felt to him that Gill has been captaining this side for a while now and this is not his first stint as captain.
He (Siraj) was bowling bouncers and yorkers at 146 kmph. They also fielded brilliantly. The captaincy of Shubman Gill was mature. It did not seem at all that he was a captain for the first time. It looked as if he had been doing it for years.
Siraj bowled an entirety of 185.3 overs over the course of five Test matches. He was also the only pacer in both sides to have played in all five Test matches. Siraj was instrumental in India’s win in both matches where Jasprit Bumrah was absent. He took a match setting five wicket haul at Edgbaston in the second Test.
To make his numbers even better, he took a match finishing five wicket haul at The Oval in the final Test. He uprooted Gus Atkinson‘s stump to help India draw the series and retain the trophy. For this incredible performance in the last test match where he took a total of 9 wickets, four in the first innings, Siraj was awarded the player of the match award.
A look back at Mohammed Siraj’s golden performances in SENA countries
Mohammed Siraj was key when it came to India drawing the series by winning the last Test match in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar trophy Test cricket series. He was also key in India’s only other win in the series at Edgbaston earlier.

However, this performance in England, which happens to be one of the SENA countries, is not a “first” for Siraj. He has previously made such impactful contributions that have helped India win and draw Test matches in SENA countries.
Siraj’s first burst onto the International cricket scene was back in the 2020-21 Australian tour. The series was drawn at 1-1 before the final Test. It was Siraj’s 5/73 in the second innings that helped India win a memorable Test match at the Gabba and also to win the series.
In the 2021 England tour Siraj was key to India winning the Lord’s Test. His figures of 4-94 and 4-32 in the two innings helped India clinch a famous win. He once again showed his ability in hostile conditions when he blew away South Africa in their own backyard with figures of 6-15.
That win helped India draw the series in South Africa and was an impressive result back then. The Hyderabadi pacer has matured further in the recently concluded England series. Two five wicket hauls and a tireless bowling effort on wickets that didn’t offer much has impressed one and all.
