Tensions flared up on the third day of the India-England Test at Headingley, Leeds, when Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj had a brief verbal exchange with England’s Harry Brook, on the pitch. The 31-year-old speedster was subsequently hit for runs by Brook, in the very next over.
Englishman Harry Brook was at his best, against India on the third day of the opening Test match. The 26-year-old, fell just a run short of scoring his ninth Test century, ending with 99 runs off 112 balls against the Men in Blue, while taking England well past the 350-run mark. Brook, who has most recently been appointed England’s white-ball skipper, hit 11 fours and two sixes, forging two crucial 50+ partnerships.

Brook was later dismissed by Prasidh Krishna in the 88th over of England’s innings, inflicting a major heartbreak. He struck a short delivery high into the air, which took a crucial edge and traveled directly to Shardul Thakur at long-leg. Meanwhile, for the Indian bowlers, it proved to be a rather dismal outing, apart from Jasprit Bumrah. Mohammed Siraj concluded his spell with two wickets, giving away 122 runs.

Siraj found himself at the center of controversy, when he engaged in an ugly verbal spat with Harry Brook on the pitch. The incident happened in the 84th over of England’s innings. Off the fifth ball of that over bowled by Mohammed Siraj, the 26-year-old batter tried to push a sharp ball forward but missed it by a margin, as it hit him hard on his elbow and his thigh, and rolled away from the pitch.
Once the ball rolled away from Brook, he quickly looked back to see where it went. However, once the Englishman turned back towards the bowler’s end, he saw Mohammed Siraj looking at him with an agonistic look. Having been hit for two fours in that very over, a frustrated Siraj gave Brook an angry and prolonged stare and exchanged a few harsh words, in an attempt to break the batter’s concentration.

Nonetheless, Siraj’s attempt to break Harry Brook’s focus did not pay off. The exchange did add a bit of spice to the session, but Brook did not let the moment affect his batting rhythm. In Siraj’s very next over, the England batter shifted gears and in an attempt to seemingly extract revenge, scored 18 runs off the 86th over. He hit the third ball of Siraj’s over for a towering six over long-on, and two boundaries off the last two deliveries.

In the two consecutive overs that he bowled to Harry Brook, Siraj conceded a dismal 28 runs. While Siraj could not get the better of Harry Brook, he did manage to dismiss England skipper Ben Stokes and all-rounder Brydon Carse, during the spell.
Unexpected Moment: Mohammed Siraj Inspects Ollie Pope’s Bat, Leaving Fans Amused
Mohammed Siraj left fans amused, after he was spotted curiously inspecting England batter Ollie Pope’s bat during the latter’s innings. The hilarious incident occurred during the drinks break on the second day of the first Test between India and England at Headingley in Leeds.

Mid-match, Mohammed Siraj casually approached Ollie Pope’s end of the stumps and to everyone’s surprise, casually picked up the Englishman’s bat for a curious inspection. Siraj even took guard with the bat and re-inspected it, before putting it back to its place. These playful antics were likely a reaction to Pope’s innings, where Siraj had beaten the batter multiple times with his swing but remained wicketless.
Meanwhile, Ollie Pope ended the second day’s play by completing his century. He scored 106 runs off 137 deliveries before being dismissed in the 52nd over by Prasidh Krishna, caught behind by wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant after an outside edge.
