The Detroit Lions travel to Maryland this week for a shot at a winning record against an equally desperate Baltimore Ravens. The Lions will take on the AFC North Super Bowl favorites at the M&T Bank Stadium on Monday at 8:15 p.m.

The Lions and the Ravens both have one win in the record column so far, surprisingly, both coming in the first week itself. The Green Bay Packers got the better of the Lions, their divisional rival, while Josh Allen led a miraculous comeback to defeat the Ravens in Week 1. In Week 2, the two teams brought out their offensive explosives and steamrolled the Cleveland Browns and the Chicago Bears, respectively.

The Lions and the Ravens are one of the teams with the fewest head-to-head games in history. They have played each other seven times in the past, of which the Ravens have won six. The only time the Lions were able to defeat the Ravens was in 2005.

Their last matchup took place two years ago. The Ravens all but silenced the Lions into submission with a 38-6 win. Lamar Jackson completed 21-of-27 for 357 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing nine times for 36 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Jared Goff failed to throw one touchdown and was intercepted once. The Lions would be looking forward to their first win over the Ravens in two decades on Monday.

Why can the Detroit Lions win?

The Detroit Lions’ passing attack is a deadly force. Jared Goff is coming off one of his best career outings, backed by an offensive line that allowed just two pressures last week. The Lions can capitalize on the fact that the Ravens are missing key pass rushers such as Kyle Van Noy and possibly Justin Madubuike. They have an opportunity to keep Goff upright and let playmakers like Amon-Ra St. Brown and rookie Jameson Williams attack a secondary that has shown vulnerability against top quarterbacks.

If the Lions’ protection holds, Goff can spread the ball quickly and force Baltimore’s defense to play catch-up. Detroit’s defense also has the tools to make Lamar Jackson uncomfortable. They have been effective at limiting quarterback rushing yards, something few teams can claim, and their front seven is disciplined enough to contain designed runs and scrambles.

Furthermore, the Lions’ balanced offense can exploit Baltimore’s early-season cracks in run defense. Despite uneven run-blocking grades, Detroit still produced 177 rushing yards last week and has found success attacking the edges, exactly where the Ravens have been vulnerable. The rushing duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, complementing Goff’s passing attack, should give the Lions a path to a statement road win.

Why can the Baltimore Ravens win?

The dual threat of Lamar Jackson will once again be the greatest weapon in the Baltimore Ravens’ arsenal. He is known to put defenses under pressure, and the Lions’ secondary might not hold against Jackson. The Lions’ secondary is ranked near the bottom of the league in yards per attempt and passer rating allowed.

The Ravens’ ground game is another major advantage. Despite a hiccup in Week 2, Derrick Henry and Jackson remain one of the NFL’s toughest rushing attacks. The Ravens averaged 8.2 yards per carry in their opener and boast elite run-blockers like center Tyler Linderbaum. Detroit has been solid against traditional runs but hasn’t faced a dual-threat quarterback of Jackson’s caliber this season.

The Baltimore Ravens can swing the game in their favor through timely pressure or even forcing a few turnovers. The Ravens’ defense, despite their limitations, has utilized exotic blitzes and late rotations that can confuse quarterbacks. Last but not least, it’s their home turf.
