The Washington Commanders (3-4) visit the Kansas City Chiefs (4-3) on Monday night, looking for their first win in three weeks and a rise to a .500 record. The cross-conference opponents will meet at Arrowhead Stadium for their twelfth matchup, first since the Commanders took their new name.
The Chiefs and the Commanders played last in 2021, when the former defeated the Washington Football Team 31-13. Patrick Mahomes threw for 394 yards and two touchdowns while completing 32 of the 47 passes thrown. Meanwhile, the Washington Football Team was limited to just 276 total yards. The Chiefs have historically been the winners in their matchups, while the Commanders have won just once in 1983.
The Commanders, who haven’t beaten the Chiefs in 42 years, aren’t as strong as last year, though. The NFC Conference finalists started the season strong with a win over fellow division mates, the New York Giants.
They followed the win with a loss and continued the pattern until Week 6, when the loss to the Chicago Bears put them at 3-3. In Week 7, they suffered their first back-to-back loss and fell to their first below .500 mark since the first week of last season.
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t had the best of starts. They started 2-3 before scoring two back-to-back wins and rising to 4-3. The Chiefs, who are looking to bounce back from the Super Bowl loss last season, will look forward to having a huge lead before a crucial game against the Buffalo Bills.

Why can the Washington Commanders win?
The Washington Commanders, despite their lukewarm start to the season, are one of the strongest teams in the NFC. The Commanders might not have repeated the same production from last year, but with Dan Quinn and Kliff Kingsbury, the underdogs cannot be written off.
The Commanders are among the teams with the best rushing offenses in the league. They were ranked first before James Cook and the Bills put forward one of the best games on foot this season. The Commanders have rushed for 1,042 yards, averaging 5.43 per carry. However, the Commanders haven’t gained much through the air.
The addition of Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel will add extra support in the skill positions for the Commanders. The absence of Jayden Daniels would still factor in against them.
Why would the Kansas City Chiefs win?
The Kansas City Chiefs are firing on all cylinders with Rashee Rice back in action and the offensive output gradually increasing from former boring levels. They will also have the confidence from last week when they steamrolled a fellow divisioner into a shutout win. They also have the added advantage of playing at home. Playing four, they have lost just once at home this season.

The Chiefs are facing the Commanders, who are without their main star, on Monday. The Commanders are one of the weakest franchises on the defensive end of the ball. The defensive limitations extend to the pass defense, with dead-last rankings in yards per attempt and yards per completion. Their increasingly better passing game can have a field day with the wobbly defense. The Commanders also have a bottom five turnover differential.
