Alexander Zverev vs Lorenzo Sonego: Preview
Alexander Zverev has participated in just a handful of tournaments this year. He reached the Quarter-finals of the Australian Open, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. He won the ATP 500 Mexican Open in Acapulco, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Final, 6-4 7-6. In the just concluded Miami Open he was ousted in the very first round he played, losing to Emil Ruusuvuori in three sets, 6-1 3-6 1-6.
Zverev had a bye in the first round, in the second round he will face Italian Lorenzo Sonego. Sonego was having an average season until last week. He found form and how! Sonego put together a title winning run, and in the process became the first Italian man in fifteen years to win an ATP Trophy, the Sardegna Open, at home. In the final he came from behind to defeat Laslo Djere 2-6 7-6 6-4. In the first round here, Sonego defeated the Hungarian Márton Fucsovics, 6-3 6-4.
Alexander Zverev vs Lorenzo Sonego: Head-to-Head
This is their first meeting on tour, so the head to head stands at 0-0.
Alexander Zverev vs Lorenzo Sonego: Prediction
Zverev is a two time Quarterfinalist at the French Open, in 2018 and in 2019, so his ability on clay is beyond question. His backhand, his ability to hit slices, his overall variety in his game, makes him a great contender to win on clay. Sonego plays his best tennis on clay and he proved that with a trophy win at Sardegna. But up against the quality of Zverev he is likely to fall just short.
Match Prediction: Alexander Zverev will beat Lorenzo Sonego in three sets.
