Rublev has done something which happens only once in a blue moon, he has beaten Rafael Nadal in the Quarter-finals of a clay court masters event. But is it a real surprise? It shouldn’t be.

Rublev has been the most consistent player on tour this year. Since the Australian Open where he was a Quarter-finalist, he has done well consistently in all the tournaments that followed. In the four tournaments Rublev has participated in post the Australian Open, he has won one and reached the Semi-finals of the other three. He won the Rotterdam Open and has reached the Semi-finals of Qatar, Dubai and Miami. In the Monte Carlo masters too he is in the Semi-finals. On his way to the Semis, he has beaten players of the caliber and panache of Salvatore Caruso, Roberto Bautista Agut and Rafael Nadal.

His opponent in the Semis is the twenty-two year old Norwegian Casper Ruud. Ruud has only participated in a handful of tournaments this season and has been good without being great. At the Monte Carlo though he has been great so far. In the first round he beat Holger Rune. In the second he defeated the seventh seed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets. Ruud came face to face with Pablo Carreño Busta in the round of sixteen, and won a great match in three sets. Ruud swiftly dealt with the defending champion Fabio Fognini in the quarters, he won in straight sets 6-4 6-3.

The two players have met thrice on the tour before and Rublev has won all the three encounters. So leads the head to head 3-0. Their last encounter was at the Australian Open this year, where Ruud gave a walkover while trailing 2-6 6-7.

Rublev is high on confidence, in great form and should win this match. But he has to play his best tennis for that. Often, when you defeat players of the caliber of Nadal etc you get complacent and end up losing the next match. And if you take a player of Rudd’s capabilities lightly he will hurt you. If Rublev plays to his level, he should win this.
