Eighteenth seed Fabio Fognini started the defense of his title well as he defeated twenty-one year old Serbian Miomir Kecmanović in straight sets, 6-2 7-5. Fognini has talked about feeling the pressure of being the defending champion and this victory should hold him in good stead.

The Italian hasn’t done anything of note this season and would aim to leave a mark here at Monte-Carlo. His second round opponent is Australian Jordan Thompson. Thompson garnered a lot of praise back home in Australia when he managed to reach the fourth round of the US Open in 2020.

Beyond that though his journey has been limited to first and second round appearances in various competitions. In the first round at Monte-Carlo he beat the controversial Frenchman Benoît Paire, in three sets, 6-4 6-7 7-6.

Fognini is on known territory, he likes the clay, he has won 8 of his 9 ATP Titles on clay. Apart from that he has been to the Quarter-Final of the French Open as well. It’s hard to make a case against the defending champion. Thompson is a fighter but it remains to be seen how effective he can be on clay. Fognini should win this.
