Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov has been around the tour for more than a decade now and has been a solid performer. He has been a consistent performer has been in the top 20 for some time now.
Dimitrov won against Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 18 minutes to win the first match he’s played on clay this season and proceed to the second round.
His opponent, Jeremy Chardy is ranked 53rd in the world and has an ample amount of experience himself. Since the pandemic break in 2020, Chardy played in four tournaments in 2020 and won no main draw match.
However, in 2021 he made it to back to back semifinals at the Antalya Open and Murray River Open and then, as a qualifier, reached the quarterfinal of the Rotterdam Open. In the first round at Monte Carlo, he edged out Alexander Bublik in three sets, winning 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 to make it to the second round.

It will be a very tight match and could go down the distance. Dimitrov has been in decent form and knocked about a quality opponent like Struff pretty easily.
Frenchman Chardy has also been on song this year with some impressive results. He will want to go deep in Monte Carlo too however Dimitrov won’t make life easy for him. Expect a neck-to-neck battle with Dimitrov just swifting past Chardy.
