Eighth seed Berrettini was forced out of action for a couple of months after he suffered a muscle tear in the Australian Open 2021. In the Australian Open he beat Karen Khachanov in the third round, to set up a meeting with Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth. But, the muscle tear forced him to forfeit that match.

Berrettini has not played on the tour since then and would hope for a winning return to the tour in Monte- Carlo. He had a bye in the first round, and in the second he faces twenty-one year old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain.

Fokina missed the entire Australian Season with Covid. He returned to court after that and his best result has been  reaching the Quarter Finals of the Montpellier Open. In the first round of the Monte-Carlo he overcame Australian Alex de Minaur 6-4 7-6.

Matteo Berrettini vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina: Prediction

 Matteo Berrettini

Berrettini is a fantastic player on fast hardcourts but he is decent on clay too. He has two ATP Titles on clay, Gstaad in 2018 and Budapest in 2019. The enormous power he generates is effective on all surfaces. Fokina is a tricky player and mixes and matches his powerful shots with disguised drop shots. The only disadvantage for Berrettini will be his lack of match practice, but he will be able to overcome that.

Match Prediction: Matteo Berrettini will beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets.
