Busta is coming off a trophy win at Marbella. It was his first trophy win of the season and first trophy win at home. In the finals he beat rising star Jaume Munar in three sets, 6-1 2-6 6-4. Here at the Monte-Carlo Open he has beaten Italian Stefano Travaglia in the first round. A tight match, done and dusted in two sets 7-5 7-6.

In the second round, Busta will face the Russian Karen Khachanov. Since the Australian Open, Khachanov has reached the Quarter-finals of two ATP events, first at Rotterdam and then at the Open 13. In the just concluded Miami Open, he was ousted in the round of thirty-two by Jannik Sinner. Khachanov beat the Serbian Laslo Đere in the first round, winning 6-4 6-1.

Khachanov too is a French Open Quarter-finalist and a decent player on clay. But Khachanov lacks variety in his play and struggles with defence, and this part of his game  will be exposed by Busta.
