Monte Carlo Masters marks the first of the three clay-court tournaments of the Masters 1000 category. After its conclusion, the Madrid Open and the Italian Open will be held.
Before the Monte Carlo Masters, the tennis world was focusing on the two Sunshine Double tournaments – Indian Wells and the Miami Open. The two tournaments saw the newest champions in the form of Jack Draper and Jakub Mensik.
Mensik chose not to come to Monaco. In the Miami Open final, he defeated World No.5 Novak Djokovic, who lifted the title in the principality back in 2013 and 2015.
The Serb will be chasing his 100th ATP title and his first since winning the tour-level trophy at the 2023 ATP Finals. Last year in the tournament, the 37-year-old was defeated by Casper Ruud in the semifinals. Ruud, the two-time French Open semifinalist, however, was unsuccessful in the summit clash, losing it to Stefanos Tsitsipas, who took home his third title of the tournament.
The Greek was successful in bagging the title for the first time in 2021 and defended it the following year. But in 2023, Andrey Rublev was crowned as the champion.
World No.1 Jannik Sinner will not be playing as he is serving his three-month doping suspension and will be making his comeback at the Italian Open which starts on May 7 as his ban lifts on May 4. Last year, the three-time Grand Slam champion was defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals.
World No. 2 Alexander Zverev, the top seed, will aim to end his trophy drought in the tournament as he has not yet claimed a title since winning the Paris Masters last year. The three-time Grand Slam finalist suffered a dip in his form since losing this year’s Australian Open final to Sinner.
Carlos Alcaraz, on the other hand, will be bidding on his second title of the season following the Rotterdam Open. He has won eight titles on the red dirt, including at the French Open but never won in Monaco. Alcaraz will be playing in the tournament for the first time since 2022 (lost in his first match). The four-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from the event in 2023 and 2024.
