Alexander Zverev has set up a blockbuster quarterfinal match against Joao Fonseca in the Monte-Carlo Masters. Zverev beat Cristian Garin and Zizou Bergs to set up his match against Fonseca.
The unseeded Brazilian ace first breezed past Gabriel Diallo, then survived a scare against Arthur Rinderknech. In the third round, he knocked out Matteo Berrettini, who shocked the tennis world with a double bagel win over 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev.

Although Alexander Zverev is the winner of nine clay-court titles, he has never tasted success in Monte Carlo. He is a two-time semifinalist in the tournament, reaching the stage in 2018 and 2022. Last year, he suffered an opening-round exit, losing to Matteo Berrettini. He, in fact, will be playing the quarterfinals for the first time since 2022.

Zverev started his campaign for the 2026 season at the Australian Open, where his run ended after a five-hour, 27-minute battle against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. After an early-round exit at the Mexican Open, the three-time Grand Slam finalist reached the Indian Wells semifinals, only to lose to Sinner.
It was the four-time Grand Slam champion who stopped him from reaching the Miami Open final. Zverev trails 4-8 in the head-to-head matchups against Sinner and has lost his last seven matches. He will be up for a semifinal clash with the World No.2 if he beats Joao Fonseca and Sinner goes past Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Fonseca, on the other hand, will be playing his career’s first Masters 1000 quarterfinals. Before this tournament, he produced his best performance at this level at the Indian Wells Masters, where Sinner knocked him out in straight sets. The 19-year-old, in fact, is competing in The Principality for the first time.
Earlier this season, after skipping two events Down Under due to physical issues, Fonseca suffered three back-to-back early-round exits before he reached the Indian Wells fourth round and lost to Sinner. Then in Miami, Fonseca’s campaign ended in the second round with a straight-set defeat to Alcaraz.

Sascha is chasing his first title of the season and has yet to progress to a final. The last time he reached a final was at the 2025 Vienna Open, where he lost to Sinner.

Fonseca, on the other hand, is the winner of two titles, including one on clay. After winning the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals, Fonseca lifted his career’s first singles title on clay by defeating home favorite Francisco Cerundolo at the 2025 Argentina Open. He then doubled his title tally by going past Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Swiss Indoors final.
The 28-year-old will be locking horns with Fonseca for the first time. Fonseca has already faced World No.1 Alcaraz and No.2 Sinner, and now, he will be clashing with World No.3 Zverev.
