Most runs in an over in IPL: In the fast-paced Indian Premier League (IPL), the most important duty of a bowler is to maintain the low economy, while of course scalp a couple of wickets, otherwise, batters make a mockery of them by hitting sixes and fours around the stadium.
But there have been unlucky days for a few bowlers who end up scripting unwanted records. Just like amassing runs for a batter is considered a glorious thing for them, bowlers’ conceding many runs is an over becomes a bane for the team and sometime, the team fails to recover and ends up with a humiliating defeat. Not just this, often one wonders if the bowler is even fit for the shortest format.
There have been instances when an over becomes a turning point of the match. A team has to pay the price due to a bowler’s conceding far too many runs in a single over due to his sloppy bowling. In the list with most runs conceded off an over, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) pacer Harshal Patel stands atop with 37 runs which he gave away against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2021.
Take a look at the most runs conceded in an over by bowlers in IPL:

Yash Dayal | 31 | GT | KKR | IPL 2023 |
Arjun Tendulkar | 31 | MI | PBKS | IPL 2023 |

Top 10 costliest bowling figures in IPL history
- Basil Thampi (70/4)
Thampi played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2018. He tops the list of the most expensive bowler in IPL history after conceding 70 runs in his full quota of overs. In his separate overs, he leaked 19, 14, 18, and 19 runs, helping CSK put on a huge total of 218/6. A total of five boundaries and six sixes were smashed off his bowling.
- Yash Dayal (69/4)
Gujarat Titans’ (GT) Yash Dayal conceded 29 runs while being on the receiving end of KKR’s Rinku Singh‘s five consecutive sixes in IPL 2023. This saw KKR chase down a huge 205 at a time when victory looked impossible.
- Ishant Sharma (66/4)
The tall paceman produced his worst while playing for SRH in 2013. This saw CSK post 223 and eventually, they won it by 77 runs. SRH for the first time that season bit the dust at home. Ishant was also hit for three consecutive sixes in one of his overs.
- Mujeeb Ur Rahman (66/4)
The Aghan bowler is also the most expensive overseas bowler in IPL history. He registered the unwanted figures against SRH while playing for the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) at an economy of 16.5. His hammering saw SRH reach 212/6, plus he also went wicketless. SRH would later defeat Punjab by 45 runs.
5. Arshdeep Singh (66/3.5)
The Punjab Kings pacer registered unwanted figures in IPL 2023 against Mumbai Indians in Mohali. In 3.5 overs, he conceded a whopping 66 runs, with the wicket of MI opener Ishan Kishan, at an economy of 17.21. MI chased down a huge 215-run target in just 18.5 overs.
6. Umesh Yadav (65/4)
Against RCB, while facing Virat Kohli who was in red-hot form in 2013, Delhi Daredevils’ (now Delhi Capitals) Umesh Yadav conceded 24 runs in the penultimate over. But prior to this, he was also hit for many runs in his previous overs. RCB put on 183/4 and restricted DC at 179/7.
7. Sandeep Sharma (65/4)
Sandeep had a decent start with the ball when he played for PBKS in a match against SRH in 2013. However, Shikhar Dhawan feasted on him with four boundaries and a six, and his over also had two no-balls. He must have heaved a sigh of relief when PBKS chased down the target.
8. Siddharth Kaul (64/4)
In 2013, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s injury saw Kaul taking his place but he ended up poorly against Mumbai Indians. He went for 19 runs in his first over and 21 runs in his final over.
9. Josh Hazlewood (64/4)
The Aussie pacer registered the terrible figures while playing for RCB in a match against PBKS in IPL 2022. Not just Hazlewood, it was a day to forget for Mohammed Siraj also, who conceded 36 runs in two overs. PBKS posted 209/9 and restricted RCB at 155/9.
10. Varun Aron (63/4)
DC’s Varun Aron’s horrible day was against four-time champion CSK. Though he got rid of the big fish, MS Dhoni and Michael Hussey, Murali Vijay sent four consecutive deliveries for boundaries. And then Dwayne Bravo too hit him for 20 runs off Aron’s last four balls.
