“I haven’t felt pressure for a long time,” Fabio Quartararo much more relieved after the championship winning season in 2021

Fabio Quartararo

Fabio Quartararo has been the saving grace for Yamaha this season around as he has been able to extract the most out of that YZR-M1. While the likes of Franco Morbidelli and Andrea Dovizioso have struggled to get going, the Frenchman has dug deep to grind out the results. Fabio is currently leading the world championship with 172 points, 21 points ahead of Aleix Espargaro.

The reigning world champion’s performances have been a tad bit more special because he hasn’t had any sort of support from his team. Yamaha has been criticized throughout the season for its inferior top speed but we haven’t seen any sort of improvement in that department, leaving Fabio Quartararo vulnerable against the rampant Ducatis on the long straights.

But, Quartararo has taken everything in his stride and moved from strength to strength. He has been able to identified his weaknesses and has played on his strengths. Another thing that has changed from last season is the fact that he has looked more relieved. This is also down to the fact that the pressure of winning his first world champion is off his shoulders.

Fabio Quartararo recently confirmed that he feels stressed but hasn’t felt any sort of pressure for a long time. He said, “It’s been a long time since I felt the pressure. I’m enjoying it and Yamaha is not putting pressure on me. I also don’t put pressure on myself because I don’t see the need for it. Before the race and qualifying there is no pressure, there is stress.”

“When you know your potential and you know that you can be fighting for victories and podiums… in my case, that I won a championship, I already know the pressure. The pressure I came under in 2021 in the last two races was very tough when the title was at stake.”

Now that we’re about halfway through the championship, my only objective is to fight for the win and I don’t think about the world every time I get on the bike.

We are heading towards the business end of the season and it’s imperative for Fabio Quartararo to be in a relaxed mindset if he wants to retain his title. It’ll be interesting to see how he reacts when and if he is under attack.
