“Cam should have 100% been on the podium” : John Hopkins talks about Cameron Beaubier’s failed efforts to earn a podium finish

It has not been the best of starts to the season for the American rider but there are a few positives that he can take from the first half. Last weekend in Assen was his fifth non scoring finish of the season because of his dnf which in turn has left the driver in a disappointing 15th position in the Moto 2 world championship standings. This is unfortunate as he has shown that on his day, Cameron Beaubier has the pace to battle with the very best of riders in Moto 2.
After getting his best finish of fifth place in his rookie Moto 2 season, the American rider took his debut pole position in his home race at Circuit of the Americas in front of all his home fans and also got a second place start next time round in Portimao. Both of these races ended in utter disappointment for Cameron Beaubier as he fell from fourth in the final lap in Texas to crashing out of second place with most of the race leaders in Portugal due to a sudden rainstorm which caught everyone out.

“He had the pace to be on the podium or even better.” : John Hopkins

“It wasn’t the best of weekends practice-wise, but he always turns it around for the race. He had an amazing race, kept his head down and rode as we’ve always known him to be able to ride. We saw the Cameron of the end of last season/beginning of this season again and he had every intention of finishing on the podium, to finish off this half of the season on a high,” said the four time MotoGP podium finisher.
“Unfortunately, the mistake, it was no one’s fault, it was just a racing mistake, but it was just utterly disappointing because he had the pace to be on the podium or even better,” he continued.
Cameron Beaubier could not finish in the points but neither could his rookie teammate Sean Dylan Kelly could not add to his points tally as he headed into the summer break with a 19th place in Assen.
