Fabio Quartararo and his relationship with Yamaha seem to have deteriorated in the past few seasons. The Frenchman got his big break with Yamaha as he followed in the footsteps of his idol, Valentino Rossi, to join Yamaha in 2021. That same year, he became world champion with the Japanese squad after beating Marc Marquez and others at their games. In recent times, Yamaha’s performance has shockingly kept getting progressively worse when compared to its European rivals.

Yamaha’s top speed has been an issue as they suffer massively on the straights for fear of being overtaken by better powered bikes. As of 2023, Fabio Quartararo has only been able to score two podiums so far. Yamaha and Honda are both at the bottom of the standings. Fabio had a lot of expectations for the Misano MotoGP test.

Speaking about his frustrations, here is what the Frenchman had to say. “I mean, Yamaha believed in me when I arrived from Moto2. My attitude in the beginning of the year was a little bit more arrogant than what I had to do,” he said. “So, of course we are in a tough moment but I have to stay polite. We both want the same thing. Of course it’s difficult, but I prefer to stay calmer and try to build a better combination with everybody,” he continued.

It has been observed that Yamaha’s Achilles heel is quite possibly their top speed on the straights. Other manufacturers, such as Ducati and KTM, have been able to easily pass the Yamahas on straights, putting them at a disadvantage. On top of that, the 2023 season has been a total failure so far for Yamaha’s title campaign. This had caused Fabio to have second thoughts about his future with the squad that gave him his dream shot at the title in the past.

Currently, Ducati’s Pecco Bagnaia seems to have a strong grip on things as he leads the MotoGP championship. However, Pramac rider Jorge Martin and VR46 rider Marco Bezzecchi aren’t that far from him in the standings. With the Misano test done and dusted, the squad will race in India on September 26th. The top speed record in MotoGP could be broken here due to the long straights. It will be interesting to see what happens next.
