Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo had an interesting weekend at the Buddh International Circuit for the inaugural Indian GP. The French MotoGP rider had a troubling Friday where he had to bring in his bike into the pits twice due to mechanical issues. After finishing 6th in the Sprint race on Saturday, there were high hopes from him for Sunday’s main race.
Marc Marquez and Pecco Bagnaia who were on the podium on Saturday, went on to crash out of the Indian Grand Prix, which was a huge shock. However, this wS a blessing in disguise for Fabio Quartararo, who charged on. Jorge Martin was running in P2 and made a few mistakes, leading to Fabio overtaking him. However, the Pramac Ducati rider went on to overpower Fabio and reclaim the position to finish second.
In an interview, Fabio Quartararo described the whole situation at hand. “I saw that he was doing something strange with the leathers and thought it was maybe arm pump or something. But I could see what happened to him. The drive I had out of turn five was super bad. I was spinning like hell,” he said. “I was trying to control it with the gas but unfortunately I had nothing more on the tyre. With the grip issues we are having I could not give more of a fight,” he continued.
Yamaha’s Top speed still puts them at a major disadvantage compared to their rivals
It has been observed that Yamaha’s Achilles heel is quite possibly their top speed on the straights. Other manufacturers, such as Ducati and KTM have been able to easily pass the Yamahas on straights, putting them at a disadvantage. Despite those issues, Fabio Quartararo was able to finish third at the inaugural Indian GP. This is his first podium after the race at COTA.

The first ever Indian GP was a huge success as it provided kosher drama and a good bit of entertainment to the fans. With Marco Bezzecchi winning the maiden race, his name will go down in the history books. Jorge Martin finished second, and Fabio Quartararo completed the podium. The Buddh International circuit will be hosting MotoGP next year too according to the provisional calendar for the 2024 season.
