‘He’s the best on the grid right now’ : Marc Marquez speaks in support of MotoGP championship leader Fabio Quartararo
Fabio Quartararo and Marc Marquez
Yamaha MotoGP rider Fabio Quartararo’s hopes of earning back to back titles are under grave danger. This week MotoGP will go racing in Austria which is a track that Ducati has excelled on. The manufacturer has won 6 out of 8 races at the Red Bull Ring since it joined the MotoGP calendar in 2016. This is bad news for the Yamaha rider.
With Ducati’s winning streak at Austria, this weekend could possibly be a damage limitation weekend for Fabio Quartararo. The only problem is that the reigning champion cannot afford another damage limitation weekend as the last two races have been disappointing to say the least. With the rider retiring in the Dutch GP and a poor finish in Silverstone, another bad weekend would effectively take Quartararo out from championship contention.
The Red Bull Ring is a track where top speed can do wonders. Ducati has excelled in that although you can’t say the same for the current Yamaha M1’s which are nowhere near the top speeds of other manufacturers. Despite the overtaking issues, Marc Marquez is of the opinion that the Yamaha rider still has what it takes to make it back to back title victories. When asked about the 2022 championship fight, this is what the 6 time MotoGP champion had to say.

“Honestly, Fabio needs help from Yamaha,” : Marc Marquez on the Fabio Quartararo’s current situation
“It looks like Pecco is going in a good way. In Austria it’s one of his favourite circuits, Misano is also one of his favourites. So Pecco will be at ease and will be one of the main contenders, of course. Between Aleix and Fabio – honestly, Fabio needs help from Yamaha. I saw the race [at Silverstone] and I’m a guy from outside that can see he was riding super fast, but fighting against the others without the speed on the straight is difficult” he said.
“He’s riding in a very good way [when] alone in the practice and if he can lead the race he’s the best guy on the grid right now. But as soon as you need to fight it’s difficult to overtake. Aleix with Aprilia is the biggest surprise of the championship I think. Also, now it looks as though Vinales is riding fast so Aprilia increased a lot its level,” he continued.
With Yamaha’s top speed woes, it is important that the team finds a solution to these problems in order to aid Fabio Quartararo’s championship efforts. Failure to do so will be a massive disappointment for the rider and the team.
