Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez was forced to sit out of the 2022 MotoGP season due to a fourth operation that he had to undergo on his right arm. He announced his decision to not continue this season after the qualifying session of the Italian Grand Prix. The main cause of the injury was his crash in Jerez in 2020 where he broke his hand and it has been a series of operations and recovery phases since with this one currently being the last before the rider can get back to full mobility.

Australian MotoGP rider Mick Doohan talked about Marc’s case and also his own where the rider had to retire from the sport after his accident during  the Spanish GP weekend in the qualifying round. The crash was so horrid that it’s end result was the Australian rider’s leg being broken in several places which eventually led to the rider announcing his retirement from the sport.

“He deserves to have that chance with himself” : Mick Doohan on Marc Marquez

“When I stopped in 1999 I had a crash, I could have come back in the middle of the season in 2000. But I wouldn’t have been able to fight for the title until 2001, because I was still injured. For me, that was the time to stop. I was 33 years old, I had had a serious injury before and I knew I could do it, I knew I could come back,” he said.

“But Marc doesn’t know if he will be able to win when he comes back and he deserves to have that chance with himself. I’m sure he can, and I’m sure he made the right decision. Also, having a team like Repsol Honda behind you, which supports you and gives you time to come back strong, is good for everyone,” he continued.

With his operation deemed successful and the rider being cleared to start physio, Marc Marquez aims to get back to racing in the premier class by next year with Repsol Honda. It is a tough path ahead for the Spaniard but it is one that is necessary.
