After finishing third at Assen and second in Silverstone, the Austrian GP will be an interesting race to watch Maverick Vinales in action. The Spanish rider will be aiming to grab his first victory with the Aprilia MotoGP team after getting very close in Silverstone. After starting in P2, Vinales was on a charge and battled eventual race winner Pecco Bagnaia in the last few laps. A small mistake meant that the Italian got the better of him and finished ahead. Although this P2 finish was a testament to the Aprilia rider’s true pace.
During the last few laps of the British GP, Maverick Vinales demonstrated some serious race pace and was the fastest rider on the track. The Spaniard attempted to take the lead from the Ducati rider at turn 13 but Bagnaia fought back immediately on turn 14, thus preventing Vinales from doing so. With the rear tyres going off at this stage of the race, Vinales lost momentum. This meant the Aprilia rider went wide three times and ended his chances of grabbing the race win.

”Well I’m happy but I have my eyes on the prize“ Maverick Vinales on his P2 finish in Silverstone
“With four laps to go I started to lose the rear because I really pushed. With ten laps to go I started to make 1m 59s and I pushed a lot. I pushed maybe too much. But that was the way and it nearly worked. We need to keep trying,” he said.
“Well I’m happy but I have my eyes on the prize . I have my eye on the victory because we believe a lot in that. But second is a fantastic result for us and I started the season where we expect and step by step we are building up,” he continued.
During a race weekend where Aleix Espargaro wasn’t in the best condition with his injuries from the FP4 crash, Maverick Vinales didn’t disappoint. The Aprilia rider was the team’s best chance at getting a good result and he got it done. The momentum at Aprilia is great with the team leading the championship by 2 points over Ducati. Remaining races of the season will determine where Aprilia finish in their battle with Ducati.
