Miguel Olivera reveals key strategy that helped him score a 6th place finish in Silverstone

Miguel Olivera

Miguel Olivera had started the British Grand Prix in 13th position and crossed the finish line in a brilliant 6th position. The Portuguese rider had gone on a charge during the final few laps of the grand prix. This was where he overtook the injured Aleix Espargaro and Fabio Quartararo who had poor pace in the whole race. He further went on to attack Suzuki rider  Alex Rins at the ending stage of the grand prix.

Miguel Olivera explained that it is necessary for the Portuguese rider to make crucial overtakes in the first few laps of the grand prix. This is in order to prevent himself from getting “stuck” and not being able to overtake in tricky conditions. Even with the difficulties that arose during the span of the race, the KTM rider is pleased with 6th place. This result meant that his brilliant strategy translated to the rider being just 3 seconds away from race victory.

“If I don’t overtake in the first two laps, I almost always have to wait until….” : Miguel Olivera on his strategy for the races

“Yes, at the end… I almost always have to… if I don’t overtake in the first two laps, I almost always have to wait until the bike is a little bit lighter to be able to overtake under braking. We had too much pressure in the front tyre, too much temperature – normal. So, I had to be quite patient on those laps, trying not to let the group get away but also not to do anything risky, and finally to have a good pace until the end,” he said.

I think it was a strategy that paid off, but I would have liked to have done it four positions further ahead and then maybe I could have fought for the podium. However, we left the weekend quite happy with the distance to victory. We will be motivated to improve on this sixth place,” he continued.

Miguel Olivera is currently in 10th place in the drivers standings with 81 points to his name. His KTM teammate Brad Binder is up ahead in 7th position with 98 points to his name. Considering the remaining few races left in the 2022 MotoGP season, who do you think will come out on top in the KTM Teammate battle?
