“Now is not the time to fight for the podium”, Marc Marquez comments on probability of winning races in 2022
Marc Marquez
Six-time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez returned to the tracks in Austin during the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas. The Spaniard made a comeback, much to his fans’ glee, after his diplopia incident during the Indonesian MotoGP weekend at the Mandalika International Street Circuit.
Coming back to an entirely new season of MotoGP with a new bike to get used to, Marc Marquez had a hard time adjusting to the radically-revised Honda which he drove during the practice sessions in Austin. In a race track where he has won on several occasions before, Marquez could only achieve P9 in the Qualifying Session and P6 in the Main Race on Sunday.
While many of the fans were thinking Marquez would not want to dive into a fight with his rivals on the track just yet, he announced that he had come back to COTA for competing with his fellow MotoGP riders and for scoring Championship points. Marquez’s luck did not side with him in Austin as he suffered a technical difficulty early in the race, and then went on to make a spectacular comeback from the back of the grid to P6. He ended the race with 10 points to his name, and wishes to gain more as they move to the European leg of the Championship.
Marc Marquez wants to remain practical and improve his performance before going for race wins in MotoGP
After finishing sixth in Austin, Marquez is now heading to Portugal for next week’s MotoGP race as 13th in the Standings, with 21 points under his belt. Seeing the driver flourish even after enduring such awful injuries since 2020, his fans are excited to see him on the podium as a race winner as soon as possible.
But Marc Marquez stayed practical and answered that winning races at the stage that he is in right now, would not be possible. He believes he is not at the level he needs to be to achieve race wins, so he would not think of podium places anytime soon. The Spaniard commented, “Now we need to understand what our level is in European tracks, which I don’t think is the level to fight for the victory every race.”
“But we have some weak points that we need to improve if we want to be consistent in all race tracks.”
“I mean what I learn is that with this championship, with this bike, you cannot predict the GP.”
“You cannot go into a GP and say ‘this one I will win, this one I will finish top five, this one I will finish top 10’.”
Will Marquez’s practical views help him and his team, Honda, improve themselves in the future so that they can aim for winning races and eventually, the Championship? Only time has got the answer to that.
