The inaugural Indian GP provided all the drama and entertainment that one could ask for. Ducati’s Pecco Bagnaia had entered the race weekend as the favorite to win the race. However, he was beaten in qualifying itself as Marco Bezzecchi went on to take pole at the Buddh International Circuit. The Sprint race was a bit of damage control for the Italian, who finished behind Jorge Martin but was on the podium.

Sunday’s race didn’t go as planned for Pecco Bagnaia who went on to retire his bike for the third time in the 2023 MotoGP season. The Italian rider lost control of his bike. Whilst finishing his overtake on title rival Jorge Martin, Pecco went on to crash out of the race at turn 5 during lap 14. This in turn put the Ducati Factory rider at a huge disadvantage when it comes to the title fight.

In an interview, Pecco Bagnaia opens up on the incident. “We were there with Jorge and as soon as I overtook him I didn’t increase my pace. But as soon as the rear came back from the slide [braking for Turn 5] it pushed the front and I lost it. It’s something that can happen,” he said. “I’m not happy because I think this doesn’t have to happen to me, because I’m fighting for a championship. It’s a mistake that right now I cannot do,” he continued.

Pecco Bagnaia’s championship lead has been cut down to 13 points

Bagnaia had come into the Indian GP holding a decent 36 point lead over title rival Jorge Martin. After the Sprint race on Saturday Bagnaia’s championship lead to Martin was reduced to 33 points. However, Sunday’s race took everyone by surprise as Pecco went on to crash out of the race. This, in turn, gave championship rivals Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi a massive advantage.

Pecco Bagnaia now merely has a 13-point lead over Jorge Martin, who finished the Indian GP behind Marco Bezzecchi in second place. The VR46 team rider is also actively closing in on the Ducati factory rider in the standings. It’s fair to say that the championship fight will be going on till the final race of the 2023 MotoGP season.
