Suzuki and Dorna finally reach to an agreement confirming their MotoGP exit at the end of the 2022 season

The entire MotoGP paddock was caught by surprise when Suzuki announced that they will be departing from MotoGP at the end of the 2022 season seven years after they had returned back to competing in the premier class. Suzuki made it’s unexpected announcement of exiting the sport to it’s team members during the one day test which occurred after the Spanish GP. This decision shocked many in the MotoGP paddock including the top management at Suzuki who had absolutely no idea about the whole decision making process.
Suzuki won their first title in 20 years with Joan Mir during the 2020 season. Although regarding their decision to exit, Dorna announced that such a decision could not be made unilaterally which triggered a series of negotiations. Suzuki’s current deal stated that the team would compete in the sport till 2026. A deal that they had signed during this year in the early stages.
After negotiations came to an end, Suzuki announced that they will be pulling out of MotoGP at the end of the year while also terminating it’s factory involvement with the World Endurance Championship.

“Suzuki has decided to end the participation of MotoGP and EWC in the face of the need to re-allocate resources on other initiatives for sustainability,” Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President said.
“Motorcycle racing has always been a challenging place for technological innovation, including sustainability, and human resource development.”
“This decision means that we will take on the challenge to build the new motorcycle business operation by redirecting the technological capabilities and human resources we have cultivated through the motorcycle racing activities to investigate other routes for a sustainable society.”
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all our fans, riders and all stakeholders who joined us and enthusiastically supported us from the development stage since we returned to MotoGP racing.”
Suzuki Ecstar MotoGP riders Joan Mir and Alex Rins are left without a ride for 2023 in the premier class of MotoGP although Mir is expected to join Repsol Honda while Rins is projected to join the LCR Honda Team next year.
