The eight-time Moto GP World Champion Marc Marquez is no stranger to horror crashes. But one of the biggest and most significant ones is, without a doubt, the crash at the 2022 Indonesian Grand Prix weekend.

The Honda rider struggled to match the pace of frontrunners like Fabio Quartararo, Jorge Martin, and Johann Zarco throughout the weekend. Marquez is known for his undying persistence, and he displayed just that as he continued to search for more pace during the Warm-up session on Sunday. He was still pushing when his Honda’s rear tire slipped out, leading to a massive high-side. Watch the horrific crash below.

The rider was sent flying through the air and eventually landed on his helmet and his left arm, suffering a massive blow to his head. The Honda bike continued to tumble violently on the tarmac, narrowly missing a collision with Marquez. Honda reported that Marquez later visited a local hospital and was declared unfit to race due to a concussion.

The Spaniard experienced vision discomfort (which began after his high-speed crash at the 2013 Italian Grand Prix) as his diplopia returned. This was quickly addressed by his trusted physician, Dr. Sánchez Dalmau, who’s looked after Marquez’s condition since 2013. The Number 93 wasn’t seen at the Indonesian GP as Marquez was declared unfit for the race. Marquez’s fortunes have been dwindling since the turn of the decade. Let’s revisit the Grand Prix that started it all.

2020 Spanish GP: The unraveling of the Marc Marquez – Honda era

Ever since stepping up to the Premiere Class in 2013, the Spaniard has proved himself to be one of the very best riders in MotoGP history. Marquez absolutely dominated the sport for seven long years, winning the World Title 6 times during 2013-2019. The 2020 season opener at Jerez was the Grand Prix that unraveled Marquez’s domination.

The Race has become a classic because of Marc Marquez’s unbelievable resilience and skill, some claiming it’s the fastest Marquez has ever ridden. The Grand Prix saw the Number 93 take over the lead from Maverick Vinales in the opening laps; the Honda appeared to streak away from the rest of the pack.

Marquez then was forced to make one of his classic yet utterly unreal front-end saves as his bike slipped away into the gravel on lap 5, putting Marquez in P16 (there were only 18 bikes racing).

The Comeback that followed left many speechless. Marquez continued to put in record-breaking laps, one after the other, as he overtook two riders per lap, eventually reaching P3 by lap 20. This level of pace remains unprecedented in Modern MotoGP. The rider was fast closing down on Vinales, who was in P2 when disaster struck again. Marquez’s Honda (notorious for it’s violent high-sides) crashed heavily into Turn 3 and sent the rider flying into the gravel.

Marc Marquez sustained a career-ending injury to his right arm and had to sit out the entirety of the 2020 season. The rider still hasn’t returned to his best and is still searching for his 9th World Title. Although many small incidents led to Marquez’s fall from the top, the 2020 Jerez GP will always mark the beginning.
