“We have always focused on one rider” : Alberto Puig admits Honda’s sole dependence on Marc Marquez with their development program

Bringing in Marc Marquez was a lottery winning decision. Rightly so as the Spanish rider made the Honda officials more than happy with him winning a championship for the next seven years with the 2015 season being the exception. This made Honda hungrier for more titles which made them go to excruciating lengths. The Japanese team were focusing on the #93 rider more and leaving his teammates out of the equation when it came to having a say in the development of the bike.
After Jerez 2020 Marc Marquez has not been able to compete in a full season in MotoGP due to injuries and complications on his right arm. With the Spaniard being the backbone of Honda’s development program, his absence has been a major inconvenience for the Factory and Works Honda teams. Neither his teammates nor the guys at LCR Honda were on the same level and pace as Marc Marquez so his absence has caused a lot of problems as expected. For the first time in over 40 years of MotoGP history, Honda finished a race without achieving any points. All the Honda riders failed to finish in the top 15.
“In the history of racing, we have always focused on one rider” : Alberto Puig on Honda favouring Marc Marquez.
“The combination of Marquez and Honda was very strong for years, he won the championship six times in seven years. Now he’s been injured for two years, he came and went, he couldn’t develop the bike. That’s why we’re in deep trouble, yes. In the history of racing, we have always focused on one rider. Now, perhaps for the first time, we ran into problems with this system. Some other manufacturers have not been up front as often as Honda” Alberto told the media.
As we can see, after years of denying accusations stating that Honda was favouring Marc Marquez with regards to development of the bike, Honda finally gave in and admitted that those accusations were true. With Marc’s absence, Honda is in some deep trouble.
