India scripted history at Barbados after they clinched their second T20 World Cup title. It was a sheer display of determination and dogged resilience by the Indian team throughout the competition. They managed to become the first team to win the T20 World Cup title without losing a single game in the tournament.
It was not just a tale of a single player. The whole squad chipped up with important performances throughout the tournament. In every match, there was a new hero and the collective performance of the team took them to this precious title. They have broken the drought of 11 years without an ICC title.
Obviously, special mention should be given to their captain, Rohit Sharma. He was heartbroken after India lost the ODI World Cup final in 2023 against Australia after winning all the 10 games until then. However, the Hitman led from the front in West Indies and USA, played selflessly throughout the tournament and was a big part of the win.
MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain, and the winner of the first T20 World Cup in 2007 congratulated the Men in Blue for the World Cup win. Though he seldom posts on his social media, he did not forget to write his feelings that he had while watching the nail biting final between India and South Africa.
World Cup Champions 2024. My heart rate was up, well done on being calm, having the self belief and doing what u guys did. From all the Indians back home and everywhere in the world a big thank you for bringing the World Cup Home. Congratulations. arreeee thanks for the priceless birthday gift.MS Dhoni (Via Instagram)
India beat South Africa by 7 runs in a nail biting final of the T20 World Cup 2024
Indian captain, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. Sharma, Pant and Suryakumar Yadav departed cheaply. However, India’s greatest match winner stepped up on the day of final. Virat Kohli held the innings together with Axar Patel and scored 76 runs off 59 balls. Patel himself scored 47 runs off 31 deliveries. Shivam Dube‘s 27 runs off 16 balls helped India post a total of 176 runs in their 20 overs.
In reply, the Indian bowlers rocked South Africa very early with the wickets of Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks. Tristan Stubbs and Quinton de Kock stiched together an important partnership.
However, the dangerous man, Heinrich Klaasen was trying to take the game away from India with an innings of 52 runs off 27 balls. After he smashed 24 off an Patel over, the game was done and buried. With 30 needed of 5 overs, Hardik Pandya stepped up and picked up the wicket of Klaasen. From there, South Africa just went downhill. Jasprit Bumrah showed once again why he is currently the best bowler across all formats.
Arshdheep Singh just gave away 4 runs in the 19th over and then Pandya bowled like a champion in the final over by defending 16 runs. Special mention should be given to Yadav, who took a splendid catch in the final over on the boundary to dismiss David Miller. He not only saved a six but also took the catch which felt like a dagger in the hearts of the South African players and their fans.
