“Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin will be the last generation of those quality spinners”, MSK Prasad calls the end of spin quality for India in Test matches

India's spin era ending: MSK Prasad says Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin may be the last of India's top-class Test spinners.

Former Chief Selector of Indian Cricket Team, MSK Prasad, has criticised Indian batters’ inability to play spin on the spin-friendly surfaces at home after the series loss against New Zealand post their defeat in the second Test match in Pune. Prasad talked about how every country creates a pitch that suits them, but he feels that it is a myth now that India plays well on spin-friendly surfaces.

Prasad also went on to say that the duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be the last of the quality spinners produced by India. Furthermore, the team will struggle to find spinners who will replace what the duo brought to the Test matches for India.

I think, probably, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin will be the last generation of those quality spinners. After that, we will always be looking at people who will be a mystery sort of a bowler or people who will be a quickish sort of a bowler bowling six different varieties in a Test match. I think slowly, somehow, that art, the quality of art of spin, is waning drastically.

MSK Prasad told Boria Majumdar on RevSportz

Prasad claimed that India has moved on from the days where their batters would toil hard and bat long hours to bring up the score of 250-300 runs on the board. So, he feels that things are not the same anymore and India can no longer be called a spin-friendly country.

Team India lost a Test series at home after 12 long years

Team India finally managed to lose a Test series at home after the 2-0 loss against New Zealand, with one match still to play in Mumbai. The last time they lost a home series was way back in 2012 against England. The Indian batters had a disappointing run of form in the two Test matches. As a result, their proud record was shattered.

In the first Test match in Bengaluru, they were rattled for just 46 runs in the first innings. A week later, in the second Test match, they were outclassed by the spin mastery of Mitchell Santner. This comes as a big blow before India travels to Australia for a five-match Test series in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25.

India’s chances of qualifying for the WTC 2023-25 final have also been hampered by the series loss at home against New Zealand. The team has struggled to play spin for the last few years in any format. Additionally, the experienced batters have faced constant issues from any sort of spin threat.
